This 1991 Land Rover Defender is unique in all the best ways

It has the color theme you want in a classic SUV, but as you dig into this fully restored 4×4, you’ll discover some terrific modern features. This includes turbodiesel power, an A/C interior, full back seats, and other pieces that keep this capable while also being extremely distinctive.

The paint is called Heritage Green, and you know exactly why. When you close your eyes and picture the original Land Rover Series vehicles, this is the color you imagine. It really looks like a terrific classic with the clean iconic lines, color-matched steel wheel, and the white roof and grille giving you a hint of two-tone. The reason why this one looks so good is that it was given a full frame-off in Italy before being imported to the USA in 2019. So it’s quite a fresh and detailed presentation. And it lets you know it’s a more modern machine in subtle but useful ways. This includes the full LED lighting package, a proper trailer hitch on the rear, and modern off-road tires.

The restoration also means a well-done interior. You have high-back bucket seats up front, a cup holder center console in-between, and even an upgrade to cold-blowing air conditioning. But while this one is comfortable, it also never loses that rugged Land Rover feel. The robust rubber floor, meaty steering wheel, and a dash with cubbies for your tools all remind you that this one is built for stout use. And that’s handy no matter if you’re working on the farm or coming from a day at the beach. One of the most interesting parts of this Defender is in the rear. Where you often see facing jump seats, this one has two proper bucket seats with shoulder belts. It’s a true Land Rover feature, and they both fold out of the way so that you can have the center open for cargo. So you still get a versatile rear with a wide-swinging door, but now it’s more accommodating for passengers.

The 2.5-liter turbodiesel under the hood is a powerhouse that was never offered in the USA, but when you want the best in torque, you know it’s the one you want. It only gets better when the motor was part of the full restoration investment. This powerplant has earned a tough-as-nails reputation from the Scottish Highlands to Gibraltar, and because this has been a long-standing British motor, the parts are also widely available. The five-speed manual transmission is the ideal pairing to give you full control over the diesel power. The high ground clearance and two-speed 4×4 transfer case assure that you can keep going even when the trail ends. But there’s more to this Defender. The power steering, power brakes, and front discs remind you that go-anywhere also means being easy to drive down Main Street.
